Trooping the Scout – LEGO Star Wars Magazine, July 2023

It’s the first serious heatwave of the year and as usual my brain has turned to jello and I’m not getting much done other than what I seriously can’t avoid. That’s why I’m two days late with my monthly review of the LEGO Star Wars magazine, but at least I don’t have to stand in the sun in a full dress uniform like those poor saps that had to show up for Trooping the Color this last weekend, the British King‘s birthday celebration.

Due to the logistics of summer holiday season (everyone taking a break and entire offices and facilities shutting down for at least a few weeks) those issues tend to arrive in odd release patterns and while this one is technically the July 2023 issue, it’s therefore here already only halfway through June.

The first comic is yet again one of those weird “evil guy does funny stuff” concoctions and you well know that I’m totally not into that. This being Kylo Ren aboard a First Order ship instead of Vader on the Death Star doesn’t really make it much better. I really get this urge to start a petition for a “serious” LEGO-based Star Wars magazine whenever I see this nonsense.

The second comic is more palatable with some stuff going on on Endor with a bunch of Ewoks and some Scout Troopers.

The posters made me go “Whuuuut?”. You know, BB-8 is okay when he’s bobbing around in movies and the movement concept is interesting, but as a static image it’s boring. It’s just a bunch of circles, after all. And to top it off the 3D render is not even accurate. The head intersects with the body sphere. The reverse is similarly just another montage of Kylo in front of Vader. *yawn* It’s all so boring!

LEGO Magazine, Star Wars, July 2023, ExtraThe extra is, as you inevitably would have guessed from the mention in the second comic, a Scout Trooper minifigure. Troopers of all flavors are always popular, reflected by their relatively high prices on Bricklink, so this will be a welcome addition to their collection for many even if it’s the older version from the LEGO Star Wars advent calendar 2021.

This certainly isn’t the best issue there ever was and the unattractive parts far outweigh rest. The only saving grace is pretty much the minifigure and that alone could be worth it, since buying it on Bricklink would still be more expensive than just grabbing the magazine. That’s all she wrote, though. Here’s hoping the next issue will be much better. The preview of the mini AT-TE has me giddy already…
